- This painting was based on a photograph of an African market, but a short while into the painting, it took on a life of its own. I painted it around the time of the terrorist bombs in July 2005. The splattering of paint, which I like to use for a random, slightly frothy effect, took on a new meaning, giving the air of an explosion. The colour of the splattering, whilst harmonious with the overall colouring, used in this way, endorsed the perception of uncontrolled activity.
